Muddle Bartending

Bartending

A muddler is a bartender's tool, used like a pestle to mash—or muddle—fruits, herbs and spices in the bottom of a glass to release their flavor.

Cocktails that require the use of a muddler include:

  • Mojito made with light rum
  • Caipirinha made with cachaça
  • Caipiroska made with vodka
  • Mint julep made with Bourbon whiskey
  • Old Fashioned made with whiskey or brandy

Muddling ingredients such as natural mint, lime, citrus fruit or sugar enhance the flavors of the drink regardless of which type of alcohol you use, vodka, martini, bacardi rum or whiskey. The drinks will taste as if it was made at a bar by real bartenders. A muddler is an essential bartending tool used to mash drink ingredients. When using a muddler, ingredients like fruits and herbs are crushed and added to drinks. Typically, ingredients are muddled to create alcoholic beverages, but some non-alcoholic drinks can benefit from muddling as well. Join cocktail evangelists Make & Muddle for their virtual cocktail class as they help you eat, drink, & be scary this fall. Because Halloween is always a family affair, this class will include both cocktails for grown ups and mocktails for kiddos. Costumes optional for this fun, interactive class! A wooden spoon is probably the most available alternative at home for a muddler.
